During a major system migration at Veiling Vaassen, one goal was central: an error-free labeling process for the busy ornamental horticulture auction days. Together with Giesbus, the auction implemented a solution in which current system data drives the printers directly. Both slot labels and stick-in labels are now generated automatically through the Loftware NiceLabel PowerForms Suite.

The challenge: errors under peak load

Before the migration, managing labels at Veiling Vaassen took a lot of time. Manual input of plant data and item codes increased the risk of errors, especially on busy auction days when throughput is crucial. The ornamental horticulture sector requires specific labels, such as weather-resistant slot labels and stick-in labels, that have to be linked directly to the right stock and price information. Veiling Vaassen therefore looked for a robust solution that combines speed with maximum data accuracy.

The solution: speed and precision on the shop floor

For the physical output, Giesbus chose four industrial Novexx Solutions XLP 504 thermal transfer printers. These robust machines are spread across the site, so staff have direct access to the right print capacity from every workstation. The combination of PowerForms software and XLP hardware considerably increases throughput on the shop floor.

Example 1: scan-to-print workflow

To eliminate human error, a scan-to-print workflow was set up. An employee scans the barcode on an order or product. The software then automatically takes the matching data from the central database and sends the right label format to the nearest printer. Operators no longer have to type data by hand, so there are no typing errors in batch numbers, plant names or prices.

Example 2: easy slot label management

For the slot labels specific to ornamental horticulture, Giesbus developed an interface that lets users print plant data and branding with a few clicks. This system replaces time-consuming manual work with an automated process. The result: a professional look for the end product and a substantial time saving per batch.

The result: a scalable standard for the ornamental horticulture sector

Veiling Vaassen now works in a stable environment in which the software does the thinking. The benefits:

  • Error-free labeling: data comes straight from the central system, with no more typing errors in plant names or prices.
  • Higher throughput: four XLP 504 printers spread across the site mean no waiting time, even on peak days.
  • Scalable setup: new label types or workstations are easy to add without rebuilding the basis.

The success did not go unnoticed in the sector. Several locations of Tuinplant.nl and Tuinplantwinkels.nl have since also chosen this labeling standard from Giesbus.

Frequently asked questions about ornamental horticulture labeling

What is a scan-to-print workflow?

In a scan-to-print workflow, an employee scans a barcode on an order or product, after which the software automatically prints the right label with the matching data from the central database. No manual input and no typing errors, and the operator can focus on the work on the floor instead of filling in fields.

What is the difference between slot labels and stick-in labels?

Slot labels slide into a slot or insert of the plant packaging and are usually weather-resistant, suited to plants that stand outside. Stick-in labels are pushed into the potting soil and often contain plant information for the end customer (name, care, origin). Both require specific materials and print technology, which the Novexx XLP 504 delivers reliably.

Does this solution also work during a system migration?

Yes. The case at Veiling Vaassen actually started during a major system migration. Loftware NiceLabel PowerForms Suite connects to virtually any central system (ERP, auction software, databases) and can safeguard the continuity of the labeling process during a migration. Giesbus guides the setup of templates, data connections and operator interfaces from start to finish.
